*-*-*-* Welcome! *-*-*-

Thanks for taking the time to look at this tutorial i made, here i will show you a few ways to lineart your drawings, :) obviously first you will need a sketch to go over and a CG software...any will do aslong as it has layers!!

Tips on Linearting!

(*) Always Lineart on a new layer (duh)

(*) Once you have a lineart on a spereate layer, DONT colour on the same layer , it gets messy if you want to blend or undo mistakes!

(*) If your Lineart isn't on a transparent layer (lineart is on a white background) then just set the layer to Multiply :)

(*) BEST TIP EVER when linearting, bump the dpi to 300+ why do this? well if your like me..messy lines then linearting on a huge scale is good because after you have finished linearting you can resize the pic and the lines look clean ...here let me show you :

image

as you can see at 500dpi my lines are.....disgusting! they arent straight and it looks messy, but after you draw the lineart and rescale to 70-100dpi the lines appear cleaner (cos its smaller)

for Photoshop users Change DPI by going to image >> image size or press alt + ctrl + i

Tutorial Time!

ok so here some fun and easy ways to make your lineart more interesting ^_^

BASE LINE (Starter Lineart)

image

so this is the basic style of lineart, i use this alot as a starting lineart before experimenting but its not always the most effective one to use...it's kinda boring...its ok for colouring under but if your picture is black and white..or just the lineart on it's own...it will look dull and ZzZzZ -_-

OutLine Lineart

image

My fav type of Lineart! basically this is using the baseline..but adding a thicker brush on the outer parts of the lineart, it looks better than the base line doesn't it? i think so ^^ i always use this type of lineart, it's good for making the character stand out if the picture has a background with huge detail

Heavy Lines // Tension Lines
image

This type of lineart is a pain in the arse to master, it's kinda hard but makes your pics look...awesome!

How to do tension lines?

Well tension lines are created when theres extra weight and shadow.
o.o" wtf wtf wtf hmm i'll try to explain more

tension is basically Thickening the lines where theres shadow
Example : take a look at the top your wearing...focus on a crease in the material..as you can see theres dark colours that show the shadow of that crease, if your top was a drawing using tension lines these creases will have thicker lines than the overall shadow, thus making the shirt stand out more and also showing movement

image

heres an example of how i do most my tension lines, can you see the thicker lines in the creases?

Also i have but thicker lines where the clothes touch the skin, you should do this too since clothes don't stick to a persons skin (unless its spandex xD) so adding shadow where clothes touch the skin kinda gives it more detail

*faints* well i hope that kinda helps you X_x
anyway moving on xD

Thicker Outline
image

thicker outlines add a comical theme to your picture, these lines are great for comics or chibi pictures,

Coloured Lineart

image

Coloured lines! black lines are so over rated!
colouring lineart is good when your picture has bright or pastel colours also if your picture has little black in it.

How to colour Lines:

it's pretty simple but i'll show you anyway ^_^

press the layer lock button on your lineart layer, (this locks transparecy, so the only thing you can draw on are the lines, you won't be able to draw on the transparent part of the canvas) you can unlock the layer once your finished

image

image
Then just go over the lines with a colour of your choice

if your lineart is huge and you only want one colour, lock the layer than Edit >> Fill shift + f5 (photoshop)

Tip on colouring Lineart

(*) Duplicate your lineart layer and experiment with a range of colours, if you lock the layer you can also try gradient!

(*) If your colouring the lineart with many colours, make sure the colour is darker than the colour your painting next to...(eh?!?) basically, if im going to colour the lineart of a blue skirt....the blue for the lineart will be the darkest shade of blue on the skirt

AND THATS IT!

well thats all the styles of lines i use!....they look much better when you add colour

*-*-*-*- My advice *-*-*-

here's some ideas for linearting depending on what type of picture your doing (you don't have to follow this)

Picture with a Background - Outline for characters in the foreground, Base line for background (less important charcters)

Picture with lots of detail - Tension lines

Chibi/ cartoon picture - Thicker outline and Tension (if needed)

Picture with cute / sweet nature - Coloured lines

Team Picture (with many characters) - base line + outline

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

i hope this helps someone o.o' xD
all pics in this tutorial belong to me

So... do you use the pen tool to outline it, or use the mouse, or use a tablet and "ink" it? xP

Edit: o_o Ohhh this is old sorry for bumping it. :<
